About SCATVIA

SCATVIA stands for Such Creative and Artistically Talented Visionaries In Alt. That’s our legal position and we’re sticking to it. Any perception that it stands for SCA-TV, or Society for Creative Anachronism Television, is understandable, but—as is plainly evident—the world view that Scatvia encompasses is so much more than that. More than 35,000 people on this crazy planet have cared enough about the ideals of the Middle Ages to have earned the right to bear their arms--their coat-of-arms--within the S.C.A. since its founding back in 1966. Combine these ideals with the equally high ideals of Star Trek's IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations), and you come close to understanding SCATVIA.

In the world overseen by the ScatSat, we have our regular, work-a-day world, Mundania, and then there are the various aspects of the past, future and just plain fantasy that we love to play and dream in. The metaphor that Scatvia uses to express this is the ocean.

For the ocean is timeless and merciless, and totally indifferent to our passage. It can buoy you up or drag you under. Feed you or drown you. How you float along, whether happily or miserably, is of utter inconsequence to the water of life, which is the way it should be. It's the interaction of people that can take us from our solitary and aimless paddling to a joyful journey with a goal. Laughter, and caring, and finding out that it's the throwing out of little lifelines to other people that can stabilize our own craft. It's the intangible concepts--laughter and love and time and space and even money--that weave us together and give form to our world. Totally imaginary lines--latitude and longitude--define our place in the world mathematically, clocks measure that all elusive concept of time, life is gridded out as a gameboard and the mathematics of money is often the means of keeping score. "Fortunes" ebb and flow as a result of unseen undercurrents. All that truly matters in this life is the keeping afloat and the stability--the cohesiveness--that we can gather around us to protect our loved ones.

In the end we all sink forever under beneath the waves, but with luck and good planning, our dreams can survive to buoy up our children and other kindred spirits. Tears merge with the ocean, but bubbles of laughter can float forever!

SCATVIA is an opportunity for others to enjoy this world view and join in as they choose. Its long-term goals started out as aiming for a weekly TV series ala Second City Television or Monty Python. Along the way to "sketching out" the path to this goal, comedy skits were written, graphics designed and this web site put together to encourage and nurture the many other creative talents out in the world. Frankly, it's taken on a bit of a life of its own as the camera lens has pulled back and widened its vision to encompass the world from our ScatSat. Its long-term mission now is promoting world peace, prosperity and tolerance through shared stories and laughter; acknowledging the worth and value of every individual by  encouraging their participation on the gameboard of life.
