The Medieval World

Welcome to these current Techno-Middle Ages! Where people combine a love of the Middle Ages with the ease of living in the modern world, selectively re-creating those aspects that work for them and happily discarding those parts that no-one would choose to live with (like lice!).

If you would like to learn more about the Society for Creative Anachronism, visit them at http://www.sca.org. It's an amazing organization, particularly when you consider that it came out of a counter-culture party held in a Berkley backyard back in 1966. Someday, someone will write the definitive history of the Society, warts, wrinkles and all and it will make fascinating reading. In the meantime, Scatvia is certainly not the only one to poke fun at these good gentles, so if you'd like a good giggle visit the following links. http://www.goldenstag.net/players/play1.htm and http://www.goldenstag.net/players/play3.htm. Many apologies to the author(s) that permission wasn't begged first before printing them here, but they're wonderfully witty and absolutely nail the many cliched characters within the S.C.A.
Visit Stefan's Florilegium at http://www.florilegium.org/ if you'd like to do some research into some interesting S.C.A. threads that have appeared over the years. It's been found to be a wonderful resource and confirmation of behaviors that are, well, less than idyllic, as well as an affirmation of what a difference the S.C.A. has made in so many lives.

Here's a song that a clever Scatvian might want to videotape! http://merryrose.atlantia.sca.org/archive/1997-10oct/msg00280.html

Actually, there are a lot of songs that would be wonderful feature performances in an S.C.A.-based program, as well as a lot of SF fandom based filksongs. Check 'em out at http://www.filk.com/links.htm and tell 'em where you found the link. If any of the particular performers would like to submit funny music videos for the Scatvian Film Festival, well, that'd be great!
If you're seriously interested in the historical Middle Ages, here's a great link to Websites Every Medievalist Should Know... http://panther.bsc.edu/~shagen/WebsitesMed.html

The Empire of Chivalry and Steel is another medievalist/Renaissance-based group that looks interesting, too. Right now it seems to be mainly based in the Southwest, but who knows? That could change! Anyone want to start a household? http://www.ecs-imperial.org.

Let's not forget the Marklanders! Visit their site, http://www.markland.org/ to find out more details....
